ISM leadership

Chair

Allan Herse

PCA Ground Engineering (Australia)

Allan Herse is an Australian Chartered and Registered Professional Engineer who graduated from The Queensland University of Technology in the early 1990s. Much of his career has been in the field of reinforced soil structures and deep foundations both within Australia and through extensive overseas engagements. In 2009, Allan and two friends started PCA Ground Engineering to specifically focus on introducing micropiles into the mainstream Australian construction industry.

Vice Chair

Natalia Maca

MSc. Eng., Titan Polska (Poland)

Today I proudly call myself a geotechnical designer. But when I graduated in civil engineering from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, I had a different plan. I worked in general contracting, gaining practical experience in field construction work. I also collaborated with my university in mining research programmes, expanding my knowledge of soil mechanics, rock engineering and advanced numerical modelling.

Executive Director and Treasurer

Mary Ellen Bruce Large

P.E., BC.GE, Nicholson Construction Company (USA)

Mary Ellen Large proudly serves ISM as executive director and treasurer.  She has run ISM as a volunteer for over 25 years to connect micropile enthusiasts around the world and promote efficient use of micropile technologies.  With Dr. Donald Bruce, she evolved the group from a series of international workshops into a worldwide nonprofit professional society aimed at sharing technical information and fostering camaraderie and enthusiasm for advancements in micropiles.

Immediate Past Chair

Dan MacLean

P.Eng.

For the first half of my life, I had never heard of a micropile, yet since then it has been a pillar of my foundation of growth. I was studying to become a mining engineer in Nova Scotia and was doing an intern position at a Potash mine in New Brunswick. Due to some unfortunate events, there was a large influx of water into the mine and production was halted. I was soon laid off but was able to secure a position with a company that became Geo-Foundations a few years later. And as they say, the rest is history.

Honorary Chair

Donald A. Bruce

Ph.D., D.GE, C.Eng., P.G. L.G., L.E.G.

Dr. Bruce holds degrees in Geology and Geotechnical Engineering from Aberdeen University, Scotland. He worked for specialty geotechnical contractor, Colcrete, Ltd., for almost 10 years in the U.K., Pakistan, Hong Kong, Egypt and the Middle East.

ISM’s Steering Committee is responsible for defining the strategic direction of ISM.
