J. Erik Loehr, Ph.D., P.E., is presenting the Lizzi Lecture at ISM's 15th International Workshop on Micropiles in Vail, Colorado, from May 31-June 2, 2023. His presentation, titled “Mainstreaming of Micropiles: Probabilistic Calibration of Axial Resistance for Load and Resistance Factor Design” is the 11th annual Lizzi Lecture delivered since inauguration of the series in 2008. 

The Lizzi Lecturer is a micropile practitioner invited by the ISM Steering Committee who is recognized by ISM as making distinguished contributions to the micropile industry. The lecture honors the spirit and memory of Dr. Fernando Lizzi (1914-2003), the visionary leader of ISM and the inventor of the “pali radice” or original “root pile” foundation system.  

Loehr is the Glen A. Barton Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri and a senior principal engineer with Dan Brown and Associates. He has more than 30 years of experience conducting geotechnical engineering research, most recently including work to develop probabilistically calibrated resistance factors for design of micropiles for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program. He has authored or co-authored numerous publications, including the most recent updates to FHWA’s Geotechnical Engineering Circulars 5, 10 and 15, and has contributed to development of practical reliability-based design provisions for several state departments of transportation and AASHTO. He is active in professional organizations and has received numerous awards including the Osterberg Memorial Lecture and Award from Deep Foundations Institute, the Harry Schnabel Jr. Award from ASCE Geo-Institute, the ADSC Outstanding Service Award, and the K.B. Woods Award from TRB.  

ISM's 15th International Workshop on Micropiles includes lectures, discussions and panel sessions on all aspects of micropile technology, the 9th Lizzi Scholarship, the 4th World Cup of Micropiles competition, and several social events.
